Assess one process before automating it

Choose a repeatable workflow with a clear trigger, normal path, output, and owner. A request intake, scheduled import, or recurring approval is easier to assess than an entire department. The worksheet keeps operational pain separate from readiness to automate.

Score the bottleneck

Ten questions produce a Bottleneck Severity score from 0 to 40. They cover manual touches, volume, waiting, errors, reconciliation, movement between systems, dependence on one person, visibility, deadline risk, and staff time. This score helps show whether the process is worth attention.

Check automation readiness

Five questions produce a separate Automation Readiness score from 0 to 20. They ask whether the process is stable, its rules are clear, its data is usable, an owner can make decisions, and most cases follow a normal path. A painful process with unclear rules may need documentation and stabilization before software changes.

Choose one next action

Low-severity work may only need monitoring. A moderate bottleneck with good readiness may be a quick win; a more severe one may justify prioritized improvement. When readiness is low, document or stabilize the process first. Record the largest bottleneck, a measurable result, the first fact to verify, and the person responsible for the next step.
